What’s Art for me?

This is my last ESOL’s assessment and my first video in English.
My view about Art, and my way to say goodbye.

Why I think it’s vital to encourage teaching Art in schools?
Two years ago, while I was doing a workshop about “comic strips” in a Primary School, I discovered that 12 years old children had a level in Art similar to 6 (years old). The reason of that, I think, is because they hadn´t enough time for studying Art in class.
A report by Warwick University said “since 2010, the number of arts teachers in schools had fallen by up to 11%”.
Pablo Picasso said “every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up”
As for me, I would have liked to live my artistic self-discovery in the school. Nobody taught me how to draw, I learned by myself… working and practicing a lot.

What is art for me?
Art is not only knowing to draw or playing an instrument.
Art gives you an opportunity to see the world through different eyes.
I believe that arts are joined together… A piece of music, a film, a street art, even a person, can inspire you to made an original and creative thing.
Drawing is exposing yourself to others,
is stepping outside the comfort zone…
as you are doing when you speak English.
It’s to fail,
it’s to do right.
It’s to try, to learn, to enjoy.
As observer, art knowledge gives you skills to appreciate art pieces,
looking them with more attention,
soaking up music, finding more details…
As creator, art gives you resources to express yourself in different ways.
Art is a self-discovery path where sometimes you feel to have butterflies…
It’s a way to express an idea (draw1), a feeling (draw2), a message (draw3).
Sometimes, I release a frustration (draw4),
or I say a personal lesson (draw5).
Other times, Art is to lose fear of face you a white paper…
An excellent speaker, Ken Robinson, said
“If you’re not prepared to be wrong,
you’ll never come up with anything original”.

Draws for my students

I was listening this song while I went to a job interview. Few months after that, I was working as assistant in a Kumon academy.

In only two weeks, it was very crazy! It was the first time when I could live my both passions: education and art.

He was so man and so teacher… He didn’t write what he thought, he thought writing as he thought speaking and living. His life was to think and feel, and made us think and feel.




A mission for teachers

I want to share with you this part of the film “Lugares comunes”. I’ve tried to translate it to English, with the kind help of my friend.
If there are any mistakes, please, let me know. Surely I would learn something new.

Next year, almost all of you will be teachers. You don’t know a lot about Literature, but it´s enough for teaching . I’m not worried about that.

My main concern is that you keep in mind that teaching means showing. Showing isn´t indoctrinating, it’s informing, but giving as well, showing as well a method for understanding, thinking and questioning that information.

If any of you is a retard who believes in revealed truth, dogmas of religion or political doctrines, it would be healthier that you preached in a temple or in a stand. If, sadly, you carry on with this, try to leave your opinions in the corridor before you enter the class.

Don´t force your students to memorize, that doesn’t work. What is imposed by force, is rejected and quickly forgotten. No child will become a better adult because he knows in which year Cervantes was born.

Aim at teaching them how to think. Let them doubt and wonder. Don’t value them by their answers, answers aren’t the truth. Look for truth, even though it’s always relative. The best questions have been repeated since the time of Greek philosophers. Many of these are commonplace but they still hold sense: What, How, Where, When, Why. If in this we admit that the goal is the path itself, that wouldn’t be a valid answer. It describes the tragedy of life, but it doesn’t explain it.

There is a mission, a mandate that I want you to fulfill. It’s a mission nobody commended you, but I hope that you, as teachers, commit to.

Wake in your students the pain of thought. Without limits. Without mercy.
